Color Theory

Submission Deadline: 11-01-2026

HOW DOES COLOR MAKE A PHOTOGRAPH MORE POWERFUL?

For this contest, we invite members to explore the intentional use of color as an important element of photographic design.
Color theory is simply the way colors relate to one another; and how those relationships can create mood, contrast, harmony, balance or emphasis in an image.

Color harmonies are intentional combinations of colors that feel balanced, unified, or visually effective together.

Your photo might use complementary colors (for example blue and orange) to create contrast; similar colors on the color wheel or analogous to create harmony; variations of a single color or monochromatic to establish a mood; or a targeted splash of color that draws attention to the subject of your image. These possibilities are intentionally broad. The goal of this contest is not about simply submitting vivid colors. Instead, it’s about how color contributes to the success of the photo and answers questions like:

·       How does color guide the viewer’s eye?
·       Do the relationships between colors create contrast or harmony?
·       Do colors create a particular mood or feeling?
·       Would the image have the same impact absent the use of color?

We want to see how you use color intentionally as part of your photographic image. In judging the image, the judge will be seeking to answer the question: Is color integral to why this photograph succeeds?

So, remember…

It’s not about photographing colorful things; it’s about using color intentionally to make the photograph stronger
